Little Girl's Cloche Hat Russian Pattern Update

I know it was MONTHS ago I posted about my intent to make the little cute cloche hats that are bombarding the interwebs.

Many sincerest apologies for the delay. The Christmas and getting the Sonofaguns ready for the school year had kind of taken over life BUT I have been working on them when life grants me 5 minutes to sit down for crochet bliss.

So just to recap (pardon the pun... cap/ hat etc), I posted back at the beginning of December about how I was going to make these hats from the patterns which are posted elsewhere by talented pattern creators.  The original pattern was created by a Russian lass and poorly translated into English can be found here.

I then located a website with a link to a clever lady who has one of the patterns available for free on etsy in 'real life English' which you can download from here.

I have been making two hats. One for a 4 year old and the other for a 2 year old.
The hat patterns don't seem to give sizings for the different ages. Usually we get to try them on the lucky little ladies as we go so we can adjust.

However the little girls who are to get these hats are elsewhere in various locations in this vast continent, so I'm using 1 part interwebs assistance, 1 part guesswork, and 1 part luck and hoping they will fit!

The hats are a little bit stretchy. Which is great!  The added ribbon stops that stretch. Which is not great. So let's hope they fit!

So here's my first BIG REVEAL:

This is hat number 1 on Sonofagun No. 2...

I followed the Etsy pattern up until the first batch of single crochet stitches before the brim, then only did altered the pattern a little so it would naturally flick out a little.  The brim also was less bulky than when using the original pattern.

I then found some gorgeous ribbons at Big W (of all places!)

And used the lovely soft green ribbon....

And then added some flowers and leaves from various free patterns that the Google found for me.

I freestyled the green viney stuff which was so fun, almost addictive. I was on the verge of covering the hat in green curly vines all over the place!

The leaves are Lucys from Attic 24 which can be found at the bottom of her post tutorial for the Triple Layer Flower .

The large rose is called the Gratitude Flower which can be downloaded for free from Bonita Patterns .

The little flowers were another free pattern from the clever blog Crochet and Other Stuff.

The addition of the green ribbon meant that whilst Sonofagun No.2 with his nearly 6 year old head, was able to model the hat in the first photo, it wouldn't fit him with the ribbon on in the final photo.  If it is going to be too small for a 4 year old girl, then it may need to be removed (insert sad face here).

And so for the 2 year old's hat, I have almost finished the actual hat part.

In a previous post I modelled a reluctant Sonofagun with a yellow thing half finished on his noggin.

I scrapped that. It was shit. It kept inexplicably blowing out to a beret for an elephant.

I jumped in Luce (short for Luciano) the trusty X-trail and headed to the nearest Lincraft (Geelong of all places!) and found some lovely 2 ply cotton in a deep blue:

And I have 4 short days to get this one finished to be handed over to Aunty Horse Rescuer when we meet up at the Mothership's birthday in th Garden of Eden (aka Mollymook NSW, aka where I want to retire when I win Lotto next week).

What do you think?

Now I know I promised to interpret and write up the other Russian Hat pattern which doesn't have a proper English translation online and looks like this:

I will do this when I finish this project. Hopefully it won't take me as long this time...

If any of you have finished one of these cute hats, I'd love to see it!

I'm not sure if you can paste photos in the comments section or email me via the Google+ link but give it a go and I'll post them here for all the world (10-15 regular readers including my mother and various aunts, cousins and friends) to see!!

  2. So the etsy pattern worked? I was asked to make some of these for some little girls I go to church with. Any help or advice on understanding the free pattern would be awesome. Or should I just try the etsy one? Normally I can look and figure out but I am struggling with this one. Thanks!

    1. Hi Nicole!
The Etsy pattern does work. But it doesn't really give a good indication of sizing for different ages. What it does do is give a mathematical formulae for working out the childs head circumference to work out the hat diameter. Apparently it's the childs head circumference times Pi minus 1.5cm! That is detailed on the first page.
I'm kind of lazy at maths and the children I am making hats for are on the other side of the country from both me and my aunt so this has been a bit of guesswork for sizing. After giving the orange hat to Auntie Horse Rescuer for the 4 year old, she said it would fit the 2 year old. Doh!
The brim in kind of in 2 stages. The first is 3 rows of straight single crochet, and 1 row of single crochet with SC's added in. I only did 2 rows of SC, before the last row with extra SCs.
The second part of the brim is the rows of front and back post double crochets.

When I also started to work on the 2nd stage of the brim, I switched to a hook one size up, as for me, this seemed to create a perkier brim. When I tried to make the second hat and stuck to the pattern still using the 2.5mm, it didn't create that cute turned out effect.
So I'd say give the Etsy pattern a go. It's simply one lass's interpretation of the Russian original. The body of the hat is super easy with a little fiddling towards the end.
      Good luck!

  3. I enjoyed reading your story of the hat making.. you are so funny! How many sonofaguns do you have? I've seen those cloches and they are magnificent.. but I'm not sure mine would look anything like those fancy ones! So nice to meet you, I'm glad you found me!

    1. Thank you Teresa! It's so lovely to connect with others out in 'Blogland'! I have 2 Sonofaguns, each equally quirky, frustrating and funny! Working on translating these patterns have become a great project for me. Whilst one of them has already been figured out by one lovely lady and made available for free on Etsy, the other pattern is the one I've now been concentrating on. Whilst they're not my usual choice of project, I've enjoyed the challenge!

    3. Hi there! So lovely to hear from you :). I'm currently crocheting and testing and writing like a demon to post everything in time for next wednesday at the latest. It's a challenge I've set for myself! I'll definitely let you know when I'm done. My favourite is the spiral cloche hat which doesn't have an english translation. But it soon will!

  4. I have looked at the original translated version and all I can say is I am glad YOU are working it out. It is especially hard for me because my first yarn talent is knitting and crocheting itself is more difficult for me. Thanks for all of your help.

  6. Hello, I appreciate your insight into this pattern b/c I've completed one with the biggest size. It was too big for my own head! I used 2-ply sock yarn and a size D hook. The band was stretched out and not tight at all. I really like this hat and am determined to try it again for my new granddaughter expected in less than a week. I've got a couple of years, so maybe I'll get it right by then. I appreciate the flower directions, too. Oh, I'm anxious to see the spiral one, also. I hope it's crocheted b/c I can't knit. Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi there! Are you working on the etsy pattern? If so, i think a D hook is 3.25mm? If so try using a 2.5mm hook or smaller for a little baby. Also if you are making for a bubba, check the notes for the information on head sizes and circumference to help you adjust accordingly. You may only need to crochet to round 5 to reach the diameter you need. You then simply crochet around with no further increases till you get to the brim length you need.
Btw the spiral hat is crochet! And giving me a hard time with its crazy brim but ive nearly finished!
      good luck!

  7. Can this be made out of the same cotton yarn that dishcloths are typically made out of? That is all I have at the house and wanted to give it a try now.

    1. Hi there! The original hats made by the Russian gal were made with 4 ply mercerized cotton which gives that lovely sheen. I've been using normal 4ply cotton which is the same cotton that my Nana used to make washcloths out of. It's got more of a matte look. So in answer to your question: maybe? I would say give it a go anyway! I've been using Patons cotton 4 ply which is also available in 8 ply. you could also use double knit but this would make a chunkier hat. Hope this helps. Xox

    2. Thanks, I will try it with the cotton I have for the washcloth and then if it comes out OK I will have to go buy some prettier yarn. Looking to make one for a 2 year old do you remember what size you used when you made the one for the 4 year old but it ended up fitting the 2 year old? I just found my 2.5mm hook and will be getting started soon. Thanks again

      Delete
    3. I think i used an 8ply for that orange hat because I hadn't any 4 ply at that stage. At the moment I'm using a 4 ply for the spiral hat and it's working out at about the same size but try it on her as you go. Rows 6-10 can be done to increase of required. But if you hit the right sizing, stop working in the Increase rows. I'd love to see how you go!

  8. Unfortunately she is not near me to try it on and can't get in touch with anyone to measure her head. I am on row 9 now and it seems pretty big maybe I should stop and start the cloche part

    1. Oh dear! That was my problem too! I followed the pattern and stopped increasing at row 8 if that helps!

  10. This is what we came up with: Magic ring, ch 3, 15dc in ring, pull snug and join. =16dc (ch 3 counts as first dc)
    Rnd 2: Ch 4, *1dc, ch 1*, repeat from * to * around, join in top of ch 3. = 32 sts
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same space as Ch3, *ch 1, 2dc*, repeat * to * around and join in top of ch 3. = 48 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in ch3 space, *ch 2, dc, dc*, repeat * to * around, join in top of ch 3. =64 sts.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same space as ch 3, dc, ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc, ch 2*, repeat from * to * around, join in top of ch 3. =80 sts.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc in next dc, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc in next dc, dc, dc, ch 2* repeat from * to * around, join in top of ch 3. = 96 sts.
Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. =96 sts.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. =96 sts.
Rnd 9: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. =96 sts.
Rnd 10: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. = 96 sts.
Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. = 96 sts.
Rnd 12: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, * 2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. = 96 sts.
Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in same ch 3 space, dc, dc, ch 2, *2 dc, dc, dc, ch 2*, repeat around; join in top of ch 3. =96 sts.
This ends the hat, you will now begin the brim according to the symbol chart.
Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join in ch 1 space= 96 sts.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in the next 5 sc, 2 sc in next st, *sc in the next 5 sc, 2 sc in the next sc*, repeat around and join in the ch 1 space.
Rnd 16 & 17: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join in the ch 1 space.
Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, *sc in the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next*, repeat around. Join in the ch 1 space.
Rnd 19 & 20 & 21: Ch 1, Sc in each st around, join in ch 1 space.
Rnd 22: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 7 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, repeat this around, join in the ch 1 space.
Rnd 23: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join in the ch 1 space.
You will need to shape the hat as seen in the photo. Add whatever embellishments you desire.
This is my first time writing a pattern from a symbols chart, so please let me know if there is a mistake so I can correct it.
    Good luck

    4. Hi Melanie! The pattern above i think comes from the a group called Crochet Addicts. most of the pattern interpretations (including mine) and the original hat created by the Russian lady does the double crochets in the top of the previous double crochets.

    5. Hey, I've finally gotten the courage to try the spiral hat...it's so pretty! (Plus a few folks here want it!) I'm on Row 4, and am confused. [*ch 2, dc, dc*, repeat * to * around,] Where do I place these stitches? I guess that would go for the following rows also. I thought they would go into the dc from the previous row, but then wasn't sure whether to count the 2ch on the row below, or skip 2 stitches, because it was starting to look a little ruffley. I'm sorry for the confusion; if you can't 'get' what I'm asking, that's okay...I'll fiddle around a bit. Thanks for taking the time to work out the pattern and post it in the first place!!

are you referring to row 4:
4th row: Ch 3. *Ch 1, FPDC in the next FPDC of the previous row, ch 1, DC in the DC of the previous row. Continue from * around until you get to the first ch 3. Sl st in the top of ch 3. Should have: 16 DC, 16 FPDC & 32

If so, you dc in the dc of the previous row. Feel free to email me if you wish to balibelibear@gmail.com

  11. I must admit I am totally confused. I found the original post online about the hats with pretty flowers. I then went to find the free pattern on Ravelry. I then went to Luba Davis Etsy site and the green baby hat is not listed on there. I found your post but am I missing a pattern here? The sweet orange/pink hat with the green ribbon is adorable. Do you not have a pattern for this? Thank you Julie.
My granddaughter is due in early May. I would like to have one or three made by then. I am not a good enough crocheter to work out a pattern for myself, and I do not work from charts.
