Some lovely Cloche hats from around the world

I've received some lovely photos from crochet queens around the world who've made some amazing cloche hats and I'd like to share a few with you!

Here is an exquisite creation by the ever-so-clever Vicki from Off The Hook.

I love the buttons she popped into the flowers, and the watermelon pink!!

Vicki sent me some very valuable feedback in relation to the workings of the brim which I included as an update in the pattern for this hat so a big thank you for that Vicki!

I also received a lovely email from Max who has a Facebook page All Kinds of Luv 'n' Stuff . Max had actually figured out the pattern herself from the original website and posted in her Facebook page.

With all those flowers, it's totally adorable!  She has lots of pictures of her other beautiful creations on her page for you to drool over too!

Theres in Switzerland completed this gorgeous little hat for her granddaughter.

That little flower on top is just lovely, especially how it's made in the same yarn colour as the edging on the brim. Your granddaughter will love it Theres!

This photo was sent in by Sarah. Check out this gorgeous little cherub with her beautiful yellow & white hat.  Isn't she (and the hat) absolutely adorable?

And my latest photo of this beautiful white hat has just been sent in by Sandra. Sandra says she's taught herself to crochet less than a year ago!  She used the updated brim section provided by Vicki from Off The Hook to combat that wobbly brim issue!

Thank you to Sarah, Vicki, Theres, Sandra and Max for taking the time to send your photos in.
Not only do I get the chance to show off your beautiful work, it gives everyone else some inspiration & ideas from the colourways and variety of embellishments you've used.  The possibilities are endless!

I'd love to see more your work, so feel free to send me an email of your creations (nothing crochetingly naughty!) and I'll add them to the Red Haired Amazona Crochets Facebook album for everyone to enjoy!   It can be a piece created from one of my patterns or anything you'd like to show off!

I've been busily working on Kevins new camera case.  In case you're new to my blog, Kevin is my new camera.

You know, the problem with the south western area of Melbourne is its sad, sad lack of anything remotely resembling a craft or yarn shop!

Nothing.

There is a large homewares/ craft shop called Spotlight in Werribee but that's ages away. If I want a nice range of yarn I actually leave Melbourne and drive 40 minutes west to Geelong where there's a Lincraft store on the northern outskirts of the town.

So instead I'm relying on a department store at the moment. Big W. You know, it's actually got a few yarny- haberdashery things which is great in a pinch, but there's nothing more soul satisying than wandering the aisles of a good craft store.

If anyone knows of any in the area, I'd love to hear about it!
So I zipped into Big W this morning to see if they had any fat quarters for the insert for Kevins case.

They had heaps.  Juicy, yummy colours and patterns.

I looked a little weird to other customers as I sneakily took this photo. They probably thought I was a fabric pervert.

I thought this one looked the nicest!
A little retro/ japanesey-ish?

I'm having issues with some of the workings of the crochet part of the case, so as soon as I've ironed them out I'll put up the pattern. Can you see how it's a little wonky in places?  I must admit to the cardinal sin of crochet: I didn't block it!!   That is probably my problem.

Heres Kevin trying it on with the insert.

Totes off topic are the next 2 pictures. Sunset last night was luminous.  I could not do it justice, but hope you don't mind if I self-indulgently share...

Thank you for all your lovely comments, questions and helpful feedback over the last few weeks.  I've had correspondence from many lovely readers and bloggers who've shared their experiences making THAT tricky hat.

By the way I'm joining in my very first Handmade Monday!  So pop on over and check out some lovely blogs!

  1. Thank you for popping by my blog Louise. The hats look so cute, I bet the little people look gorgeous in them. Kevin looks very cosy in his new home. Love the teeny weeny squares you have used. It must be so frustrating not to be able to get yarn and fabric easily. All the more reason for a spending spree when you do go somewhere that sells it :)

  2. Thank you for popping by and taking the time to comment as well! It's funny that I live in this big city and all the cool yarn places are way over the other side of town? So yes, I do buy up big when I can :)

  3. Love anything Granny square, the colours you have used are beautiful. I'm a lazy crochet blocker too, sometimes I'm in too much of a hurry to bother, once it in use you will never know!

    1. Thank you Lucy! I can only claim the credit for translating the hat pattern from Russian but have had an overwhelming response from Crochet Queens around the world. But Kevins case is my own invention so far! Thank you for your lovely welcome. Its been a lovely experience and can hardly wait to join in next week!

  9. So. You live in a country that has more wool-on-the-hoof than population, yet NO yarn stores..? yuck. There's something really fundamentally just WRONG there!

BTW, I don't think your prob is "blocking" - [I've never blocked a thing ever!] - but "tension". Those *tight* white "seams" look to be your culprit.. And, perhaps, stitch-count? -- Anyhoo, I think that fabric is a good match!
    :-D

    1. I know right? Unfortunately in Australia (and probably elsewhere too) the major department stores kind of edge out a lot of small retailers by selling their specialty products (like yarn) and then pricing the little guy out of business. Then they only offer limited lines of stock (Mostly cheap acrylics and some cotton blends). It's a sad state of affairs! There is one or two yarn sellers that ive just been advised of but they still aren't close!

Thanks for the tip about tension and stitch count. I'm redoing the case so I'll pay close attention to both those things and hopefully it should help. I really appreciate your input !

  10. Those hats really are so stunning!! I'm totally loving Kevin's new case! I do hope he is all cosy!!
Even in the UK it can be hard to find a decent craft shop, I never find online craft buying so satisfying, nothing better than a good ol' mooch along the rows of crafty goodness is there!
    Beautiful sunset! xx

  11. Hi Louise *waves from across the pond*
Thank you so much for sharing all the lovely hat piccies - they look fabby and special thanks for sharing the link to my facebook page. Hope you'll pop by to visit now and then.
I'm also very lackadaisical when it comes to blocking - in fact have only ever 'blocked' a finished item once in all the years I've been 'hooking' and that was my first ever lacy baby shawl I made when pregnant with my son 25 years ago! I agree it's more likely to be a tension issue but your Kevin Case looks really cute even with the kink ;)
Am heading off to Edinburgh today for a long awaited day out with my best pal. Catch you later.

    1. Enjoy your day out as I'm turning in for the night! I'm happily one of your Facebook followers now so I look forward to seeing you in my daily feed!
As I've been redoing the case it was a tension issue and this one's turning out much nicer.
      Have fun in Edinburgh!

    1. Salut!

  16. I am working on the cloche hat, which is supposed to be for a 4-6 yr old. It is way too big !!!!!!!!!! It's too big for me. What am I doing wrong? Also, I cannot find a 2.5 hook in the US, is it a different measurement in Australia?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Sue, I was just checking up a crochet hook conversion chart. So the US system which uses letters doesnt seem to have a way of classifying 2.5mm (which explains why you can't find them!). You could try using a B hook (2.25mm) or C (2.75mm). Also what sized yarn are you using? The hat is sized for a 2-3 year old using 4ply cotton yarn and a 2.5mm hook.
