Stevie Bird Amigurumi Tutorial

Hi Everyone!

With our lovely Australian Spring weather, I've been super inspired by Birds this year.

You may have already seen or even purchased my Pearly Hummingbird pattern which I released a little over 4 weeks ago.

Now I'd like to present my latest feathered friend Stevie Bird!

And this pattern is free right here, right now!

I also have created a printable PDF version of this pattern.

It will only cost a small fee of $1 on the PDF as it takes ALOT of work to create these patterns.

So what do you need?

I have used Yarnart Begonia which is a 4ply mercerised cotton, but you can use any type of finger weight yarn.

Polyester stuffing

2 x 6mm safety eyes

2.5mm Crochet hook

Stitch markers

Darning needle

Scissors

You can simply have Stevie as is, or attach Alligator clips or ribbon if you want to clip or hang her from a Xmas tree etc.

 Colour Options:

For Stevie Bird:        

Colour A– teal

Colour B– mid blue

Colour C– light pink

Colour D– grey

Colour E– mid pink

Or substitute with any of your favourite colours.

Body:

Worked in Colour A

Ch 22.



Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, and in each st across. Ch 1, turn. [21]

R2: 2sc in first st, 1 sc in each st across, 2sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. [23]

R3 &4: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. [23]

R5: 2sc in first st, 1 sc in each st across, 2sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. [25]

R6: 2sc in 1st st, (1 sc in each st across) x 11, 2sc in same st, (sc in each st across) x 11, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. [28]

R7: Sc in each st across. Ch1, turn. [28]

R8: (Sc in each st) x 13, 2sc in next st, (sc in each st) x 14. Ch 1, turn. [29]

R9: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. [29]

R10: (Sc in each st) x 14, inv dec, (Sc in each st) x 13. Ch 1, turn. [28]

R11: (Sc in each st) x 13, inv dec, (sc in each st) x 13. Ch 1, turn. [27]



Row 15. Partway through one of the invisible decreases.

R12: (Sc in each st) x 8, inv dec, (sc in each st) x 7, inv dec, (Sc in each st) x 8. Ch 1, turn. [25]

R13: In 1st st (2sc), (Sc in each st) x 7, inv dec, (sc in each st) x 5, inv dec, (sc in each st) x 7, in last st (2sc). Ch 1, turn. [25]

R14: (sc in each st) x 7, 2 x inv dec, sc x 3,2 x inv dec, (sc in each st) x 7. Ch 1, turn. [22]

R15: (sc in each st) x 7, 4 x inv dec, (sc in each st) x 6. [17]

Now the 2 sides are curving towards each other. Join them and slip stitch together.

Slip stitching the bottom of the body closed.

Finish off.

The finished body right side out.

Head

Start with Colour B

Make a Magic Ring

Round 1: Crochet 6 sc in MR

R2: Crochet 2sc in each st of previous round [12sc]

R3: (2sc in next st, 1sc in next st) x 6 [18sc]

R4: (2sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) x 6 [24]

R5: (2sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) x 6 [30sc]

Row 6 of the head. Remember to use your stitch markers!!

R6– 11: Sc in each st around. At end of row 11, finish off.

Stevie Bird can now see you!!

Fasten safety eyes between rows 8 and 9. Insert the first eye between them, then count 10 holes to the left and insert the second eye in the next hole. Close the washers from the inside of the piece.

Beak

Worked using Colour C

Ch 3. 

Work 5 dc in the first ch (3rd from the hook).


Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to form a little cone. Tie off. Thread this end onto a darning needle.

Get a tiny bit of polyfill stuffing and stuff it into the little beak.

Then sew the beak onto the head on the exact opposite side from the beginning of each rounds, between rounds 9 & 10. (see photo below)

 Once you have used the first thread to sew the beak on, leave the end dangling inside the head piece. Then thread the other cotton end onto the darning needle and thread through the centre tip of the beak to the inside of the head. Don’t pull this too tightly as it will pull the tip of the beak in. You want it to stay nice and pointy!

With the 2 loose thread ends, tie them together to secure.

And Stevies head is finished!

The Back of Bird and Tail

Worked using Colour B

Chain 12

Rw 1:  Sc in 2^nd ch from the hook and in each chain across. Ch 1, turn. [11sc]

Rw 2-8: Sc in each stitch across (including in beginning ch 1 stitch). Ch 1, turn. (do not ch 1 in the 8^th row)

Rw 9: Sl st to the 2^nd sc, Ch 1. Sc in the same st and in each of the next 8sc to the 2^nd last sc. Ch 1, turn. [9sc]

Rw 10– 11: Sc in same stitch as beginning ch 1, & in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (do not ch 1 in the 10^th row)

Do not finish off!!!   Attach a stitch marker to the last stitch to hold it place.

Using pins or better: stitch markers, attach the corners of the back piece to the corners of the body piece as shown in the photo below so the body and back will be stitched together inside out. 

***make sure to have the length of yarn which will still be used (still attached to the back piece) hanging out of the top, so when the whole piece is stitched together and needs to be turned right side out, you can then easily use it for crocheting again.

you can see this in the photo below as the mid blue length of yarn hanging out at the top right of the piece.***



One stitch marker on each of the 4 corners, plus that 5th stitch marker which was put in place to hold the last stitch on the back piece.

There's that yarn you'll use again in a moment!

Hand stitch down each of the sides.



First stitch down one side....

And then stitch down the other side...

Turn out the right way.

Then pick up Colour B with your last stitch of the back piece which was held in place with the stitch marker and start to crochet the tail:

Round 1: crochet 16 sc evenly around the opening.  For the remaining rounds, continue to crochet around in the amigurumi spiral style.

R2: sc x 11, inv dec (this should be in the centre under the tail),  sc x 2. [15]

R3: sc x 11, inv dec, sc x 2. [14]

R4: sc x 8, inv dec, sc x 3, inv dec. [11]

R5: sc x 10, inv dec, sl st to next stitch. [10]



The 5th row finished!

Cut the yarn with a 4-5 inch tail. Finish off, then turn inside out and use the excess yarn to stitch the open tail end together.

To Make up the body:

With right sides facing (the body is inside out) and the head tipped upside down, make sure the beak and the centre circle on the body (which was Round 1) are lined up and pin in place.

Using the same colour yarn as one of the  colours, or with invisible thread, sew the head to the body around from body corner to body corner. Then there will be a gap at the back of the neck which the back strip attaches to later.

Sorry about the dodgy arrows!  But you get the idea. Stitch from the bottom line around to the top leaving the gap at the back of the neck open.

Turn your little bird carefully inside out through the gap, fluff out his tail and gently stuff with the polyester stuffing.

Then once filled, stitch the back of the neck closed.

Now it's time to embroider on her little birdie feet!

Turn Stevie upside down so she looks like this:

As you can see in the photo below, I used pearl headed pins to mark out where I wanted to position the feet. The white pin marks out the base centre point.

The pink pins mark out the position of each foot.

Slide a pin in at the tip of where the claws should end, then embroider 5 long claws.

When you've finished Stevies little feet should look like this!

Wings:

Make 2.

Start with Colour C

Starting with a magic ring, ch 3, then work 11 dc into the ring.

Tie off and change to colour D

R2: (2sc, sc, sc) x 4. Tie off and change to colour E

R3: Ch 3, in the same sp dc, in next st (2dc), in next st (2hdc), in next st (hdc, sc), 1sc in each of the next 2 st, in next st (sc, hdc), in next st (hdc,dc), in next st (tr, ch 2, slip st in 2nd ch from the hook, tr), in next st (dc, hdc), in next st (hdc, sc), 1 sc in each of the next 2 st, in next st (sc, hdc), in next st (2hdc), in next st (2dc). Join with a sl st to top of beg ch 3. Finish off.  Leave a 5-6 inch tail end for sewing the wing onto the body.

Position and pin wings to the desired position on your little bird and after threading the long leftover thread from the wing onto a darning needle, hand stitch it onto the body. After you’ve stitched around the wing, tie off and hide the tail end inside the body.
